Nearly 1,000 Applicants Pass July 2009 Ohio Bar Exam

New lawyers will take oath of office at special Supreme Court sessions on Nov. 9

The Supreme Court of Ohio Office of Bar Admissions released the results today of the July 2009 Ohio Bar Exam, which was administered in Columbus July 28 through July 30. Out of the 1,177 applicants who sat for the exam, 957 (81.3 percent) received passing scores; out of 1,046 first-time applicants, 87.8 percent received passing scores.

Applicants who were successful on the examination and who have satisfied all of the Supreme Court’s other requirements for admission will be sworn in next month. The oath will be administered during special public sessions of the Supreme Court that will be held Monday, Nov. 9, at 10:30 a.m. (The Ohio State University, Capital University, University of Dayton, University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University) and 2 p.m. (Cleveland State University, Case Western University, the University of Toledo, Ohio Northern University, the University of Akron and out-of-state schools) at the historic Ohio Theatre, 39 E. State St., in Columbus.

The sessions will be streamed live via the Supreme Court and Ohio Channel Web sites at http://www.supremecourt.ohio.gov/ and www.ohiochannel.org and available statewide on the Ohio Channel’s local public broadcasting stations.

The bar exam features various components, including 12 essay questions on a total of 11 topics, the Multistate Performance Test and the Multistate Bar Examination. The bar exam is administered by the Supreme Court, which regulates the practice of law in Ohio, including the admission of new attorneys, the biennial registration of current attorneys, attorney discipline in cases of misconduct, and the administration of continuing legal education.

Other upcoming important bar admissions dates include Nov. 1, which is the deadline for filing the Application to Take the February 2010 Ohio Bar Examination to be administered Feb. 23 through Feb. 25 in Columbus; and Nov. 16, which is the deadline for second-year law school students to file the Application to Register as a Candidate for Admission to the Practice of Law in Ohio.
