Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor
Technology Grant Tour - Vinton County
May 9, 2018

(Remarks prepared for delivery on May 9, 2018, at the Vinton County Courthouse.)

Good afternoon. Thank you Judge Simmons for that introduction.

Four years ago, the Ohio Supreme Court announced the availability of grant funds to support local court technology projects through the Ohio Courts Technology Initiative.

The funds will be used to address a variety of issues and situations where the lack of sufficient technology is a barrier to the efficient and effective administration of justice.

Any appeals court, common pleas court, including any of its divisions, municipal court, or county court in the state was eligible to apply.

The Supreme Court established the technology initiative to:

Facilitate the exchange of information and warehousing of data by and between Ohio courts and other justice system partners through the Ohio Courts Network.

Deliver technology goods and services to courts.

Operate the Commission on Technology and the Courts.

and aid in the orderly adoption and comprehensive use of technology in Ohio courts. The Supreme Court awarded more than $2.9 million dollars this year alone and in the four years since we’ve been doing this, we’ve awarded over $10 million.

It’s my pleasure today to present one check to the Vinton County Court of Common Pleas, General and Domestic Relations Division, totaling $162,406.

The money will go towards a case management system update to transition away from a discontinued computer system, as well as integrate with law enforcement using a paperless system.

Vinton County Judge Jeffrey Simmons and Clerk of Courts Lisa Gilliland should be commended for submitting the grant application and for making a solid case for funding.

I don’t have to tell you that financial constraints at the local level can impede needed upgrades in technology. I’m pleased that the Supreme Court could assist in filling the funding gap.

Congratulations again. Please accept this over-sized check as symbols of our collaborative effort to improve the administration of justice in Vinton County.

And remember, do not cash this.

Thanks and God Bless.
