Justice O'Donnell Judges National Moot Court Competition

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Terrence O’Donnell judged the final round competition at the Twenty-Fifth Annual August A. Rendigs, Jr. National Products Liability Moot Court Competition held on Saturday, March 31. The competition took place at the Potter Stewart U.S. Courthouse in Cincinnati.

The only national competition devoted exclusively to products liability law, Justice O’Donnell joined other state Supreme Court justices, appellate judges, and federal judges across the county in judging the competition hosted by the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Dean Louis D. Bilionis, of the University of Cincinnati College of Law also judged the competition.

Justice O’Donnell participated in judging the final two teams of the competition. The competing teams in the final round were first-place winners Ashley Norgard and Rebecca Gilliland of Faulkner University School of Law and second-place winners Anson Call, Drew Parrish-Bennett, and Sarah Young of Florida Coastal School of Law.

“As the only national liability moot court competition, it was fascinating to listen to the students present their arguments on sophisticated legal doctrines including design defects, product defects, adequate label warnings, and the interplay of expert opinion on those subjects,” Justice O’Donnell said. “The students all demonstrated a thorough command of their presentations.”

“Our deliberations dealt with selecting and ranking the oralists, which presented a distinct challenge since all showed competence and poise in the courtroom,” said Justice O’Donnell.

Justice O’Donnell has been a member of the state judiciary for more than 25 years and has served on both the trial court and appellate court before being elected to the Supreme Court. He began his service on the Supreme Court in 2003 and was elected in 2004 and 2006. His current term will expire in December 2012.
