Chief Justice O’Connor Serves as Moot Court Judge

Supreme Court of Ohio Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor critiqued the advocacy skills of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law students Thursday at an annual moot court competition.

The 43rd annual Moot Court Night pitted two Cleveland State University teams that will participate in the regional portion of the National Moot Court Competition in November. Each team argued the issues they have briefed based on the competition problem.

“Moot court offers law students the opportunity to develop real-world oral and written advocacy skills before they practice professionally,” Chief Justice O’Connor said. “By receiving feedback and advice through this exercise now, students will be better equipped as lawyers to argue forcefully and persuasively on behalf of their clients later.”

Joining Chief Justice O’Connor on the panel were Judges Benita Pearson and Dan Aaron Polster of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio.

As the sixth woman and 148th Justice to serve on the Supreme Court, Chief Justice O’Connor was elected in 2002, re-elected in 2008 and elected as Chief Justice in 2010.
