Justice Lanzinger Speaks to Academy of Medicine

Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger provided details about the history of the Supreme Court to physicians and hospital CEOs on Thursday evening at the annual meeting of the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County.

Her remarks, “The Supreme Court – Then and Now,” centered on comparing the operations of the Supreme Court of long ago to today.

“Ohio’s Supreme Court has certainly changed in the space of over 200 years,” Justice Lanzinger said. “Especially in the historic changes that Ohioans witnessed earlier this month when Justice Maureen O’Connor became the first woman Chief Justice and Yvette McGee Brown became the first African-American woman Justice to serve on the Supreme Court.”

Justice Lanzinger also complimented the 160-year-old academy in electing Dr. Donna A. Woodson as the first woman president in its history in 2002.

“Institutions such as ours are adapting to the reality of female accomplishment and I, for one, am glad of it,” Justice Lanzinger said.

Now serving her second six-year term on the Supreme Court, Justice Lanzinger is the only person ever elected to every level of Ohio’s judiciary. The 150th Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, she previously served on the Sixth District Court of Appeals for Ohio, the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas and the Toledo Municipal Court. Her varied judicial experience allows her a unique perspective of the state court system.

Justice Lanzinger, who was re-elected in November, will take the ceremonial oath of office at a public courtroom event on Tuesday afternoon.
