Chief Justice Records Pro Bono Video Statement

In a video statement posted today on the Supreme Court of Ohio Web site, Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor encouraged Ohio’s attorneys to report their 2010 pro bono activities.

During the second week of January, more than 38,000 attorneys received an email seeking this information in order to gather meaningful information about the extent and nature of pro bono work in Ohio and encourage pro bono activity to aid those in need of free legal services.

Attorneys are also encouraged to include any financial contributions to a legal services organization in 2010.

The Supreme Court partners with the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation (OLAF) on the project to identify gaps in the delivery of legal services in order to strengthen the network of services available to Ohioans in need.

“Because of the availability of this information, more people who need legal help will get it,” Chief Justice O’Connor said.

All information voluntarily submitted will be collected without identifiers, so the results will remain anonymous. To participate, attorneys should access the reporting Web site contained in the email and answer eight questions that should take about five minutes to complete. Attorneys should also be aware that this year a firm representative has the ability to report aggregate pro bono service on behalf of attorneys in that firm, as well as the total amount of contributions made to civil legal services programs.

On an annual basis, OLAF compiles and reports the information collected to the Court, bar associations and legal services organizations throughout Ohio.
