New Magistrates to Attend Judicial College Orientation

A three-day orientation session this week will prepare Ohio’s newest magistrates to navigate the transition from bar to bench.

The Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College annually conducts orientation for new magistrates who have been on the bench for less than two years and have not attended previously.

Besides general curriculum for all magistrates on topics such as the Rules of Practice and Procedure, ethics, decision writing, points of evidence and hearsay, the orientation will offer curriculum specifically for magistrates practicing in common pleas, domestic relations, juvenile, probate and municipal/county courts.

In addition, half-hour simulated trials or arraignments featuring situations that might occur in the courtroom will present new magistrates with strategies to manage cases and their courtrooms. Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor will welcome magistrates to the Ohio judiciary via a videotaped message.

The Judicial College provides a comprehensive program of continuing education for Ohio’s judges, magistrates, acting judges, and court personnel.
