Returning Justices Sworn In to New Terms

Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger Justice Paul E. PfeiferBefore hundreds of family, friends and guests today at the Ohio Judicial Center, Supreme Court of Ohio Justices Paul E. Pfeifer and Judith Ann Lanzinger took the ceremonial oath of office at a public courtroom event.

Ohio voters re-elected Justices Pfeifer and Lanzinger on Nov. 2 to new six-year terms. Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor administered the oath to Justice Lanzinger, while attorney Richard L. Cory, a partner in the Bucyrus law firm Cory & Cory, administered the oath to Justice Pfeifer.

Pfeifer, who has served on the Supreme Court since 1993, and Lanzinger, a member of the Court since 2005, are beginning their fourth and second terms, respectively.

Each Justice spoke of a desire to continue public service careers that began long ago.

“It’s hard to believe that 18 years have passed since I first joined the Court,” Pfeifer said.

Before his election to the Court in 1992, Justice Pfeifer served in both houses of the Ohio General Assembly, including one term in the House of Representatives and four terms in the Senate. He held a variety of leadership posts in the Senate, and served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee for 10 years. His proudest legislative accomplishment was crafting the legislation creating the Ohio Tuition Trust Authority. Additionally, as the most senior Justice on the Court, Justice Pfeifer filled in as Acting Chief Justice last year after the untimely death of Chief Justice Thomas Moyer.

Justice Lanzinger is the only person ever elected to every level of Ohio’s judiciary. The 150th Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, she previously served on the Sixth District Court of Appeals for Ohio, the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas and the Toledo Municipal Court. Her varied judicial experience allows her a unique perspective of the state court system.

“After 25 full years of serving in the judiciary, I can say that my time on the Supreme Court has been the most rewarding,” Justice Lanzinger said. “We read, listen, think, deliberate and write about legal issues important to all Ohioans, and I am very blessed in being able to work with my dedicated colleagues in this beautiful building.”

Joining Justices Pfeifer and Lanzinger for the ceremony were the other members of the Supreme Court: Chief Justice O’Connor and Justices Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, Terrence O’Donnell, Robert R. Cupp and Yvette McGee Brown. State leaders from the executive branch attended the ceremony, including: Secretary of State Jon Husted and Auditor Dave Yost.
