Ohio Court Leaders Invited to National Symposium

Two members of the Supreme Court of Ohio leadership this week participated in the Fourth National Symposium on Court Management, which was sponsored by the State Justice Institute and the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

First held in 1981, the symposium was hosted by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC). The intent of the meeting was to convene judicial system leaders, by invitation only, to consider the challenges of administering and managing state courts, as well as reflect upon recent progress of the states’ judicial systems.

Administrative Director Steven C. Hollon and Case Management Section Manager Stephanie Hess shared their experience in court leadership at the national level. Hollon, who has served as administrative director for more than 10 years, is the immediate past president of the Conference of State Court Administrators. Hess serves on the board of directors for the National Association for Court Management.

Also in attendance from Ohio were William Weisenberg, Ohio State Bar Association executive director for public affairs, and Russell Brown, Cleveland Municipal Court administrator and a recent graduate of the NCSC Institute for Court Management’s Court Executive Development Program.

“About every 10 years, the nation’s top court administrators gather to consider where we are in terms of protecting individual rights in the courts, as well as how efficiently the courts operate,” said Hollon. “Not only were we able to share the experiences of Ohio’s judicial system, but we also learned more about what trends to expect in court management in the near future.”

Hollon also presented his thoughts to attendees during a session titled: “Response to Principles of Governance and Non-Unified Perspectives.”
