Sixth Circuit Holds Annual Conference in Columbus
Supreme Court of Ohio Justices hosted a reception Thursday night as part of this week’s four-day annual conference of the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
About 700 people attended the 70th conference at which federal circuit, district and bankruptcy judges discussed ways to improve the administration of justice for the four states that comprise the Sixth Circuit: Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Tennessee.
Supreme Court of the United States Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. provided one of the week’s highlights by offering remarks at a Wednesday night reception at The Ohio State University.
During the Thursday night reception, Sixth Circuit Chief Judge Alice M. Batchelder honored the late Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer with brief remarks that focused on his efforts to renovate the Ohio Judicial Center, which serves as home of the Ohio Supreme Court.
Conference participants attended many panel discussions and breakout sessions on different aspects of the law, including: sentencing, e-discovery issues, immigration, employment law, and how new technology impacts old convictions. Attendees also were treated to a conversation with retiring Associate Justice John Paul Stevens and two of his former law clerks.
A sampling of other distinguished speakers included: Eric H. Holder Jr., U.S. Attorney General; Elena Kagan, U.S. Solicitor General; and Paul D. Clement, former U.S. Solicitor General.
