New Judges to Attend Judicial College Orientation

A week-long orientation session next week will prepare Ohio’s newest judges for the rigors of serving on the bench. Forty new judges from across the state are scheduled to attend, including sitting judges elected to a new bench.

The Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College annually conducts the first session of orientation for new judges after the November election but before the beginning of their judicial terms. The second session will be held in April.

Besides general curriculum for all judges on topics such as the transition from bar to bench, judicial ethics, access to justice and fairness in the courts, and court and personal security, the orientation will offer curriculum specifically for appellate, common pleas, domestic relations, juvenile, municipal/county and probate judges. Experienced sitting judges conduct virtually all of the education.

In addition, one-hour simulated trials featuring situations that might occur in the courtroom will present new judges with strategies to manage cases and their courtrooms. Officials from the Supreme Court will also explain Court policies and the services available to judges. The orientation also pairs new judges with experienced judge-mentors.

The Judicial College provides educational programs for Ohio judges, magistrates, acting judges and non-judicial court personnel.
