Supreme Court Notifies Mayor’s Courts of Annual Registration Requirement
The Supreme Court of Ohio sent reminder letters last week to 327 mayor’s courts across the state about their requirement to register annually with the Supreme Court.
State statute requires mayor’s courts to register by Jan. 15 in any year during which the mayor’s court operates or at least 15 days before the mayor first conducts a mayor’s court, whichever is later.
In addition, the Court reminded mayor’s courts that they are required to submit quarterly case statistical reports by Jan. 15, April 15, July 15 and Oct. 15 each year. A mayor who fails to comply with the case statistics requirement is not permitted to conduct a mayor’s court, according to state statute.
In 2009, there were 330 municipal corporations operating mayor’s courts that registered and reported activity to the Supreme Court. Ohio law allows mayors of municipalities with more than 100 residents without a municipal court to conduct mayor’s court. These courts hear only cases involving violations of local ordinances and state traffic laws.
