Court Officials Brief Kazakhstan Delegates

A 10-member delegation of judges and attorneys from the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan received two briefings on the structure, rules and procedures of Ohio courts from senior Supreme Court of Ohio officials this week.

The briefings were part of a three-week program to introduce the delegates to the United States legal system, with the focus on the relationship between judges, prosecutors and attorneys. The U.S. Agency for International Development is sponsoring the trip, and the local host is the International Visitors Council of Columbus.

Rick Dove, assistant administrative director, provided an overview of the role and responsibilities of the state’s trial and appellate courts. Jonathan Marshall, secretary to Board of Commissioners on Grievances & Discipline, outlined the rules and disciplinary process that governs Ohio’s attorneys and judges.

Following the briefings the delegates said they will share the information with colleagues and suggest proposals to promote greater efficiencies to their legislators. The delegation included six judges, two prosecutors and two defense attorneys.

Kazakhstan, a republic of the former Soviet Union, declared its independence in 1991 and has a population of 16.2 million.
