Judicial College Offers Course for Juvenile Detention Officers

Juvenile detention officers will learn about the dynamics of bullying, how to de-escalate conflicts, and trauma focused services at a Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College course later this month.

The day-and-a-half free conference for front line staff working in Ohio’s 39 juvenile detention centers was developed in partnership with the Ohio Juvenile Detention Services Association.

The bullying session will help officers understand the types of bullying and their impact to respond better to youth offenders as either victims or perpetrators of bullying. Officers will also develop verbal de-escalation skills to resolve conflicts before they escalate into explosive situations. At the trauma session, officers will learn evidence-informed skills and practice using these skills to help the high number of youth offenders who come into contact with the juvenile justice system possessing a long history of traumatic experiences.

The Judicial College, an office within the Supreme Court, was created in 1976 to help judges meet their mandatory education requirements. It is partially funded by attendee registration fees and federal grants.
