Juvenile Judges to Attend Winter Association Meeting
Ohio juvenile court judges will convene this week for their annual winter meeting.
Presented by the Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judges, the two-day meeting will include a business meeting and luncheon featuring an Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) awards presentation in partnership with the association and the Governor’s Council on Juvenile Justice.
The ceremony will recognize the coordinated partnership among providers in Ohio’s juvenile justice system and acknowledge community partners for providing needed, and sometimes underappreciated, services to youth. In order to also highlight the hard work of the youth that are participating in these community programs, DYS will also put a “face” to each program by recognizing a youth who has successfully completed the program.
These awards reinforce a youth’s progress and identify and promote best practices and encourage innovation in juvenile justice. Award categories include two Community Recognition Awards, the J. Thomas Mullen Achievement Award, the Thomas J. Stickrath Reentry Award and The Director’s Award.
The Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College will administer the education portion of the meeting with a course on Thursday that will focus on access to justice and fairness in the courts regarding self-represented litigants in the juvenile justice system. The other course will explore issues and offer an overview of how developmental changes in children can affect them and their families while involved in the juvenile court system. During Friday’s educational portion of the agenda, judges will learn about reforms to Ohio’s juvenile justice system and issues in abuse, neglect and dependency cases.
