Supreme Court Recognizes Employees at Annual Awards Ceremony
Ten employees were recognized Tuesday by the Supreme Court of Ohio for their professionalism and outstanding service to the Supreme Court over the past year. Supreme Court Justices and staff attended the sixth annual ceremony in the courtroom.
The 2009 Professional Excellence Award winners include:
- Mary Harrison of Columbus – Housekeeping & Grounds Coordinator
- Dan Merrill of Hilliard – Purchasing Officer
- Ruth Ann Newcomer of Upper Arlington – Court Relations Program Manager
- Katrina Webb of Commercial Point – Education Services Specialist
Six additional employees on the Public Services Staff of the Law Library were honored with a team award including: Sharon Jewett of Columbus, Diane Kier of Hilliard, Lisa Lynch of Upper Arlington, Diana Mercer of Grove City, Ellen Seibert of Worthington, and Dusty Smeller of Alexandria.
Justice Paul E. Pfeifer said the ceremony had become a “happy tradition” for the Justices to recognize employees “in a very small way” for their service to the Supreme Court, the mission of the Supreme Court and to the people of Ohio.
Each year the Supreme Court honors exemplary employees who have distinguished themselves in one of the three categories:
- Demonstrating superior achievement in the completion of a special project or assignment.
- Consistently displaying professional excellence in the performance of their regularly assigned duties.
- Displaying a positive attitude toward one’s work, fellow employees and the constituencies of the Supreme Court.
An awards committee of 10 Supreme Court staff members and managers reviewed 30 nominations submitted by internal personnel and external colleagues and selected the honorees. This year, Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer also served on the committee. Administrative Director Steven C. Hollon noted that of the previous 21 professional excellence award winners, 17 still work for the Court.
During the ceremony, the Supreme Court also paid tribute to 46 long-time employees by noting their service of five, 10, 15, 20 or 25 years.
