Training Explores Use of National Court Performance Standards
More than 30 trial court personnel from the Toledo area attended a Supreme Court of Ohio training session this week on a set of tools designed to improve court performance.
Developed by the National Center for State Courts, the trial court performance measures known as CourTools comprise a practical and highly workable set of balanced and realistic performance measures for courts. CourTools offer judges and court managers a broad perspective on court operations, including how well the court achieves basic goals, such as access, fairness, timeliness and managerial effectiveness.
The training seminar brochure notes that “through incremental applications of one or more CourTools, judges can immediately demonstrate their commitment to providing the public and their justice system partners with high-quality services.”
Led by staff members of the Supreme Court’s Case Management Section, the “CourTools: Their Purpose and Application” seminar included group exercises involving discussion about how to analyze performance and plan for implementation.
Stephanie Hess, manager of the section, said because CourTools cover virtually all aspects of court operations, court personnel teams were encouraged to attend, including magistrates, bailiffs, staff attorneys, clerks and other operational support staff.
