Annual Seminar Focuses on Unauthorized Practice of Law

A half-day seminar sponsored by the Supreme Court of Ohio today provided the latest information on investigating and prosecuting cases against individuals who render legal services without being recognized as an attorney in the state.

Held at the Ohio Judicial Center, Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton delivered welcoming remarks for the seventh annual seminar. As part of those remarks, she provided a view from the bench on UPL enforcement and civil penalty determinations.

“UPL enforcement is probably the most direct consumer protection service brought to bear by the Supreme Court,” Justice Stratton said. “Ohioans seeking sound legal advice should take comfort in the work you do in protecting the profession and ensuring those practicing law have the experience, training and knowledge to back it up.”

Attendees included attorneys who practice before the Supreme Court’s UPL Board, UPL committee members, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, bar counsel and defense counsel.

Seminar topics included: an update from the UPL Board and review of amendments to the Rules for the Government of the Bar, UPL enforcement versus access to justice for military personnel, UPL case law in Ohio and elsewhere, UPL and ethics issues facing in-house counsel, and multijurisdictional practice.
