Association Presents Award to Current, Former Magistrates

At the recent annual fall conference of the Ohio Association of Magistrates (OAM), several current and former magistrates were honored at an evening banquet.
Magistrate Coleen Dailey of the Columbiana County Domestic Relations Court received the 2010 OAM Education Award, which recognizes individuals who have made great contributions to the judicial education of magistrates.
Three former magistrates – and current judges – who continue to support the OAM in helping magistrates perform their judicial duties received the OAM Judicial Award. They included: Judge Jonathan Starn, Findlay Municipal Court; Judge Robert Fragale, Marion County Family Court; and Judge Laura Gallagher, Cuyahoga County Probate Court.
One final presentation rounded out the evening. Phil Schopick, education program manager for the Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College, received an honorary membership in the association for his work in planning and developing magistrate education over the years. Schopick plans and implements programs and identifies and enrolls faculty to teach at both the spring and fall magistrate conferences, as well as many other programs throughout each year. This was not the first time OAM honored Schopick, as he received the education award in 2001.
Further, while in Columbus for their conference, more than 40 magistrates spent an evening volunteering at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

Formed in 1989, the OAM assists magistrates in serving the justice system with integrity via education and professional development. With about 500 members, the association represents more than 60 percent of all magistrates in Ohio.
