Bill Signed by Governor Makes Changes to Some Judges' Life Insurance Coverage

Municipal and county court judges may receive additional life insurance coverage from their local funding authorities under a bill signed into law by the governor yesterday.

House Bill 238 eliminates the prohibition against a municipal or county court judge from being eligible for life insurance coverage from a county or other political subdivision after the issuance of a group policy through the state. The change brings coverage for municipal and county judges in line with other Ohio judges.

While the main focus of the bill dealt with the disclosure of assets in divorce proceedings, another provision prohibits a county court judge from retaining marriage ceremony fees, and, as with municipal court judges, requires that any fee be paid to the local funding authority.

The bill also removed the statutorily required notice regarding possessing or purchasing a firearm when subject to certain nondomestic violence protection orders issued as a pretrial condition of release.
