Judicial College Offers First Training for Probate Court Clerks

Probate court clerks from around Ohio will attend training this week offered for the first time by the Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College. This professional development opportunity adds to annual training for probate clerks offered by Ohio’s probate court judges.

The educational programming will include the following topics: unclaimed funds, adoptions, a roundtable discussion about current issues and solutions, and general sessions on mental illness and the mental health commitment process.

“Coursework represents only one part of the two-day curriculum,” said Kristopher Steele, Family Law Education manager for the Judicial College. “Probate court clerks will also hear an inspiring message by former foster child Patrick Yewell, who is now executive officer of the Department of Family and Juvenile Services for the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts.”

Yewell will speak about how committed court personnel saved his life by removing him from an abusive home, how you can never tell what may become of the children courts save, and how each person involved in the court – from the clerk to the case worker to the judge – were important in shaping his experience. Steele said Yewell’s message to juvenile court clerks in 2007 proved to be emotional for many attendees.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer will also address participants – via a pre-recorded video – with a welcoming message about the importance of committed professionals staffing Ohio’s courts.
