Capital Law School Honors Grievances & Discipline Secretary
Jonathan W. Marshall, Secretary of the Board of Commissioners on Grievances & Discipline of the Supreme Court of Ohio, received the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award today from Capital University Law School.
Each year, the law school recognizes an alumnus/alumna who has made significant achievements in his/her legal occupation and has made notable contributions to the legal profession, community and the law school through his/her activities and accomplishments. Marshall accepted the award during Capital’s annual alumni recognition luncheon.
For nearly 20 years, Marshall has served as Secretary to the Board of Commissioners on Grievances & Discipline where he administers the process of adjudicating disciplinary complaints against Ohio lawyers and judges.
In the letter nominating Marshall for the award, it was noted that he “has effectively guided the work of the Board and has been a leader in the development and promotion of high standards of professional conduct within the legal and judicial professions.”
The nomination letter further mentions his service on “countless advisory committees that have resulted in the promulgation of rules ensuring that the public is protected from the misconduct of unethical lawyers while guaranteeing the rights of those accused of misconduct to a full and fair hearing.” In addition, the letter cites his valuable service as a member of a Supreme Court task force that resulted in the adoption of the 2007 Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct and the 2009 Ohio Code of Judicial Conduct as well as a recent appointment to a task force to take a comprehensive look at the state’s disciplinary process.
“I am grateful for the outstanding training I received from Capital Law School,” Marshall said. “I learned that lawyers have duties not only to their clients but to the integrity of our justice system and the rule of law. It is an honor to accept this award on Law Day, and I need to especially thank the wonderful people that work with me at the board and the Court.”
Capital also recognized Marshall’s deep commitment to the law school as a member of the Alumni Association Board, the Carnegie Committee and as a moot court judge. He was also the first alumnus to provide a matching gift to the Professor Emeritus John E. Sullivan Professorship.
