New Judges to Attend Judicial College Orientation

With the election last month of municipal court judges across the state, the Supreme Court of Ohio’s annual new judges orientation this week will include many areas of instruction specifically targeting municipal court judges.

Twenty-four new judges from across Ohio are scheduled to attend the week-long orientation session in Dublin. (This total includes sitting judges appointed to a new bench and judges from other jurisdictions appointed since last year’s orientation.) The Judicial College annually conducts the first session of orientation for new judges after the November election and before their judicial terms begin. The second session will be held in April.

Besides general curriculum for all judges on topics such as the transition from bar to bench, judicial ethics, diversity and racial fairness in the courts, and court and personal security, the jurisdiction-specific education for municipal judges will include sessions on domestic violence, trial skills, simulated arraignments, traffic and OVI law, and sentencing. Experienced sitting judges conduct virtually all of the education.

The orientation also includes pairing the new judges with an experienced judge-mentor. The Judicial College provides educational programs for Ohio judges, magistrates, acting judges and non-judicial court personnel.
