Domestic Relations Justice Partners Attend Additional Training
About 30 members of the bench/bar community involved with Hamilton County Domestic Relations Court met recently with the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Case Management Section for additional training on categorizing and establishing appropriate timelines for complex cases.
In September, domestic relations court personnel and justice partners attended a Supreme Court general training session on how to move cases more efficiently and effectively through the court system. Both sessions were presented in conjunction with the Cincinnati Bar Association.
Stephanie Nelson, caseflow analyst with the section, said this first-of-its-kind follow-up session helped the bench and bar determine ways to streamline complex cases in an efficient manner. “With this follow-up training, we explained the most efficient way to route complex cases, which judges should be assigned and what timelines to operate under,” Nelson said.
Administrative Judge Susan Tolbert shared some positive feedback about the training. “Having members of the domestic relations bar involved in creating effective scenarios for the improvement of docket management in the court is an invaluable resource,” she said.
Attorney J. Michael Kaufman also found the session worthwhile. “As an attorney who practices full time in the field of Family Law/Domestic Relations Court I truly appreciate the opportunity to be involved with the planning and strategizing of a process to deal with complex cases at the ground level,” he said. “The seminar enabled both sides of the bench (magistrates/judges and the attorneys who practice before them) to come together and share their perspectives and ideas. This approach will allow our county to blend our experiences into a more effective and practical process to deal with complex cases.”
The Supreme Court conducts several on-site training sessions at individual courts each year. Supreme Court staff members meet initially to discuss caseflow operations overall within an individual court and return for further discussion once the court identifies more specific training needs.
