Domestic Relations Courts Attend Caseflow Management Training
Domestic relations court personnel from around Ohio attended a training session this week on how to move cases more efficiently and effectively through their court systems. Hosted by the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Case Management Section, the training took place at the Ohio Judicial Center.
Stephanie Hess, manager of the section, said the two-day seminar marked the first time that division-specific court personnel from multiple courts were invited to Columbus to attend an individual session devoted to their common practices. Previously, court personnel from common pleas general, domestic relations, juvenile and probate divisions were all in the room. In addition, section personnel have conducted on-site training sessions at individual courts over the years.
Hess said she recommends all the justice partners involved in a particular court attend the training together. “It’s helpful to know how each person fits into the big picture of how a case moves through the system and how each person depends on the other,” she said. “Attendees participate in several group exercises emphasizing court-specific operations and planning and the practical applications of their decisions.”
During the training, justice system partners build better relationships, examine how best to treat different types of cases, evaluate their current caseflow management system, learn basic court performance measurement techniques and draft an effective caseflow management plan. Case Management staff assists courts by identifying where preferred practices, such as calendar management, trial management, backlog reduction and technology can enhance case management efforts.
Caseflow management training seminars for court divisions other than domestic relations will be held later this year in June, August and November.
