Maumee Judge Leads Technology Commission

Judge Gary ByersMaumee Municipal Court Judge Gary Byers has been appointed chairman of the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Commission on Technology and the Courts.

Established in 2007, the commission advises the Supreme Court on statewide technology issues, including the delivery of technology services to courts, the exchange of data between courts and justice system partners via the Ohio Courts Network, and the technology-related education and training provided for judges and court personnel.

The commission’s 22 members serve three-year terms with its membership consisting of judges at all levels of the judiciary, court personnel and private attorneys.

In the midst of his third term, Judge Byers began his service on the bench in Maumee in January 1994. He served as co-chair of the subcommittee established by the Supreme Court to develop technology standards for case management systems, electronic filing of cases, Web site development, electronic signatures and other issues that affect courts in Ohio. Judge Byers also teaches technology related issues to other judges on behalf of the Ohio Judicial College.

He is a 1978 cum laude graduate of Hiram College with a bachelor’s degree in political science and music history-theory. A 1981 graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law, he was admitted to the practice of law in November that year.

“The effective use of new technologies is a means by which all judges can improve their service to the public,” said Judge Byers. “I look forward to helping courts incorporate new developments that will improve efficiency without depersonalizing the justice system.”
