Supreme Court Shortens
Attorney Registration Late Filing Period
The Supreme Court of Ohio today announced the adoption of amendments concerning attorney registration and registration fees. The amendments to Rule VI of the Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio take effect May 1. Justices voted 7-0 in approving the amendments.
The biggest change imposed by the revised rule shortens the time frame from 90 days to 60 days in which attorneys on active or corporate status who miss the registration deadline can file their paperwork late and pay a late fee without being suspended.
Every odd-numbered year, all Ohio attorneys on active or corporate status must register with the Supreme Court by Sept. 1 and pay a $350 registration fee. Attorneys who fail to register and pay fees by the deadline or within the late registration period will be suspended.
The new rule also:
- Requires attorneys who wish to retire or resign permanently from the practice of law in Ohio to complete an application on a form supplied by the Supreme Court.
- Requires attorneys to supply the Supreme Court with an office telephone number on their registration form.
- Reflects the current name of the Office of Attorney Services.
The registration fee amount of $350 remains unchanged from the prior registration period.
