State of Judiciary Address Marks First Day of Ohio Judicial Conference Annual Meeting

Supreme Court of Ohio Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer will deliver his annual State of the Judiciary address on Thursday at the 2009 Ohio Judicial Conference (OJC) annual meeting.

Chief Justice Moyer's speech will be streamed live on the Internet, accessible via the Supreme Court Web site.

Chief Justice Moyer uses the occasion to speak directly to members of Ohio’s judiciary and update them on the achievements of the past year and the challenges facing the judicial branch in the year ahead.

More than 300 Ohio judges are expected to attend the two-day event and learn about all aspects of judicial decision-making. Several sessions on Thursday will address this year’s theme of “Judicial Reasoning and Philosophy: Making Good Judicial Decisions,” including those covering the philosophical aspects of judicial reasoning and the best practices for open-minded deliberation and fairness in judging.

Friday’s sessions include presentations on court technology, court interpreter issues, ethics and professionalism, budgeting issues and the use of mediation, specialized dockets, racial fairness and access to courts, developments in community corrections, and highlights of the past term of the Supreme Court.

In addition to the educational sessions, many of the OJC’s 22 standing committees will meet to confer and consider pending legislation and current issues important to the fair and impartial administration of justice in Ohio.
