Organization Honors Chief Justice for Law-Related Education Efforts

Chief Justice Thomas J. MoyerThe Ohio Center for Law-Related Education awarded Supreme Court of Ohio Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer its highest honor this week for supporting law-related programs in Ohio.

The Founders Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the ideals and growth of law-related education and the OCLRE and commemorates the efforts of OCLRE founders Tony Celebrezze, Benson Wolman and Jim Phillips for their work in establishing the Ohio Mock Trial Program in 1983.

The award criteria state that: “Consideration will be given to candidates who have worked to develop citizens empowered with an understanding of democratic principles. They will have demonstrated an ability to provide quality service to educators or will have contributed to the development of excellent programming in the area of law citizenship.”

The Supreme Court serves as one of the sponsors of OCLRE, a private, nonprofit organization that presents a wide range of teacher education programs and student activities designed to help students become aware of their constitutional rights and responsibilities. OCLRE sponsors the annual high school Mock Trial competition, which is the largest nonathletic scholastic competition in Ohio.

The OCLRE not only recognized Chief Justice Moyer for the Court’s support of OCLRE but also for promoting the Court’s other educational efforts. Those include the biannual Off-Site Court program where high school students can observe Supreme Court oral arguments in their home communities and the Visitor Education Center, which contains exhibits that portray the workings and history of the judiciary.
