National Organization Recognizes Two Supreme Court Employees

Two Supreme Court of Ohio employees were recognized last week by a national court management organization during the group’s annual conference.

Stephanie Hess, manager of the Supreme Court’s Case Management Section, was elected to serve on the National Association for Court Management (NACM) Board of Directors for a three-year term. Selected from 14 candidates nationwide, Hess was sworn in Saturday to serve on the 15-member board. Previously, Hess served on the planning, conference development, and membership services committees of the board.

The nominations committee considered candidates’ qualifications such as their years employed in a court leadership position, their years as a member of NACM and their involvement in NACM committees, other activities and projects.

“I’m excited to learn from and work with some of the best court management professionals in the country,” Hess said. “There should be plenty of best practices I can borrow from them, and they in turn can borrow from me.”

Ruth Newcomer, manager of the Court Relations Program, received the 2009 Jefferson Cup, which is given to NACM members who have made an outstanding effort or performed an extraordinary level of work on the annual conference. Newcomer was recognized for organizing meetings among conference attendees who share similar interests or jurisdictions to discuss ideas and concerns. Newcomer partnered with Pam Roberts, court administrator with the Toledo Municipal Court, on implementing the idea that’s modeled after Ohio’s successful roundtable meetings.

“I appreciate NACM’s interest in exploring new formats for providing educational opportunities and building collegial relationships,” Newcomer said. “The Shared Interest Groups were made a reality through the teamwork of many.”

As the largest court management professional organization in the world, NACM provides court management professionals an opportunity to increase their proficiency while working with colleagues to improve the administration of justice.
