Domestic Relations Justice System Partners Attend Caseflow Management Training

A two-day training concluded today for the Hamilton County Domestic Relations Court and its justice system partners on how to move cases more efficiently and effectively through the court system. Hosted by the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Case Management Section, the training took place at the Cincinnati Bar Association.

Stephanie Hess, manager of the section, said the Supreme Court conducts several on-site training sessions at individual courts each year. This week’s session involved judges, magistrates and court staff as well as about 20 members of the bar, the Child Support Enforcement Agency and other justice system partners.

Hess said she recommends that all justice system partners involved in a particular court attend the training together. “It’s helpful to know how each person fits into the big picture of how a case moves through the system and how each person depends on the other,” she said. “Attendees participate in several group exercises emphasizing court-specific operations and planning and the practical applications of their decisions.”

During the training, justice system partners build better relationships, examine how best to treat different types of cases, evaluate their current caseflow management system, learn basic court performance measurement techniques and draft an effective caseflow management plan. Case Management staff assists in the process by identifying where preferred practices, such as calendar management, trial management, backlog reduction and technology can enhance case management efforts.

Administrative Judge Susan Tolbert called the course “a powerful training tool for court management.”

The Case Management Section is part of the Judicial & Court Services Division of the Supreme Court that provides technical assistance and professional resources for Ohio courts on a wide variety of topics related to the betterment of the administration of justice.

Municipal and county courts from across Ohio will attended a caseflow management training seminar Nov. 5 and 6 at the Ohio Judicial Center in Columbus.
