Supreme Court Administrative Director to Lead National Court Organization

Steven C. Hollon, administrative director of the Supreme Court of Ohio, was elected president this week of the Conference of State Court Administrators (COSCA). By his election he also becomes vice chair of the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) Board of Directors.

As the national organization that represents the top operational executives of the courts of the 50 states and six U.S. territories, COSCA is committed to strengthening the judicial branch by improving the quality of state courts. NCSC is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice by providing leadership and technical assistance to state courts. Hollon’s election took place at COSCA’s annual meeting.

“I’m grateful to continue to serve with my colleagues nationally,” Hollon said. “Insight into the common issues that affect courts around the country – and how best to address those issues – is invaluable to providing effective and efficient administration of justice in Ohio.”

Hollon has served as a member of the COSCA Board of Directors since 2004, most recently as president-elect. Hollon has served on the NCSC board since 2007. He is only the second Ohioan to lead COSCA in its 55-year history. He became the Supreme Court administrative director in March 1999. Previously, Hollon served as the administrator/staff counsel for the 12th District Court of Appeals from 1983 to 1990 and the administrator/staff counsel for the Second District Court of Appeals from 1995 to 1999.

“Steve Hollon is a preeminent court administrator,” Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer said. “His impeccable ethics, unassailable judgment and steadfast commitment to the institution have benefited all who are served by the Ohio system of justice.”

The Administrative Director is a constitutional position in Ohio government and serves at the pleasure of the Supreme Court. As the senior non-elected officer of the Supreme Court, Hollon, along with the Chief Justice and Justices, and the various Ohio judges’ associations, is responsible for developing and communicating the long-term vision, values and direction of the administrative responsibilities of the Supreme Court and judicial branch.
